A young boy’s sight was successfully saved

A young boy’s sight was successfully saved following a serious eye injury thanks to urgent specialist care at Ysbyty Gwynedd.

After a freak accident on Christmas Eve, a shard of glass pierced the child’s eye, putting his vision at immediate risk. He was taken to A&E where scans confirmed the need for emergency surgery to prevent permanent blindness.

Consultant eye surgeon Mr Syed Amjad was called in urgently and led a rapid-response surgical intervention. The operation, carried out on Christmas morning, repaired the perforation and stabilised the eye.

The outcome was highly successful, with the child recovering almost full vision in the affected eye. His family later expressed strong gratitude to the clinical team for their speed, skill, and care throughout the process.

A pioneering eye procedure carried out at Ysbyty Gwynedd has significantly improved the quality of life for an elderly patient with complex visual impairment.

Consultant ophthalmologist Mr Syed Amjad led the operation on a senior lady whose condition had severely affected her independence and day-to-day functioning. Due to the complexity of the case, standard treatment options were limited, requiring a more advanced and carefully tailored surgical approach.

Mr Amjad performed an innovative procedure designed to restore functional vision while minimising surgical risk. The operation was successful, with the patient experiencing a meaningful improvement in sight and a return to greater independence.

The case highlights both the availability of advanced ophthalmic techniques within North Wales and Mr Amjad’s role in delivering specialist-led care for complex and high-risk patients.
